The strong desire of Manchester United to acquire a striker in the transfer market is now bearing fruits, as Arsenal was advised not to go for Viktor Gyokeres.
Along with the commencement of the final transfer window, Ruben Amorim’s arrival puts United on the radar of observers as the club obviously has a few surprises lined up. This is quite a testament to the rather eclectic style of the young Portuguese manager, which would need very specific adept with particular players in terms of formation and overall team dynamics for the desired effect.
One name that Amorim would definitely keep in mind during the transfer window when heading to Manchester in la-la land would be that of Sweden forward Gyokeres, who has already amassed 26 goals in 24 matches across all competitions this season.
The former Coventry striker excelled under Amorim, and United have struggled to score goals this season; he would be a welcomed addition. Funds could be made available for the forward if the likes of Marcus Rashford leave the club.
If United wanted the Swede, they would have to fight off Premier League rivals Arsenal who are also believed to be admirers. However, former Gunner Martin Keown believes Arsenal need to find someone better suited.
He told The Oxford Mail: “The players who are there at the moment need to start scoring goals fast don’t they otherwise Mikel [Arteta] will put his hand in his pocked and buy a forward.
“…[Gyokeres is] not quick enough. And he wouldn’t have been quick enough in my day.”
According to UEFA, the Swedish striker has recorded a top speed of 34.55mh/h in the Champions League this season. This would put him joint-55th in the competition alongside Liverpool’s Mohamed Salah.
If anyone knows what Gyokeres is capable of, it’s Amorim. Gyokeres currently has a £84m release clause, however, it is reported that Sporting would accept in the region of £63m.
