NHL Trade News: New York Rangers re-sign goaltender Dylan Garand to one-year contract extension
The New York Rangers have secured organizational stability in net by re-signing goaltender Dylan Garand to a one-year, two-way contract worth $775,000 at the NHL level.
The 23-year-old has steadily developed in the American Hockey League with the Hartford Wolf Pack, showing marked improvement each season. With veteran Louis Domingue leaving for the KHL, Garand is now positioned for a pivotal role that could shape his future with the Rangers.
Garand has been on a steady rise since debuting in Hartford during the 2022-23 season. He first worked as Domingue’s backup but gradually earned the starter’s crease by improving each year. After a rookie campaign where he posted a 13-14-3 record and .894 save percentage, Garand lifted his numbers to 16-17-5 with a .898 save percentage in 2023-24. Last season marked his breakout, as he logged a 20-10-8 record with a .913 save percentage in 39 games, making him one of Hartford’s most reliable players.
That progress convinced New York to bring him back on a fresh deal, giving Garand the opportunity to prove he can continue trending upward. His consistent development has placed him on the radar as a long-term option behind Igor Shesterkin, especially if he can handle a starter’s workload in Hartford.
With Domingue moving to Russia’s KHL, Hartford’s goaltending responsibilities now fall primarily on Garand. The Rangers expect him to take on 40 to 50 starts during the 2025-26 campaign, a heavy workload that will serve as a proving ground.
If Garand thrives, he could elevate into NHL backup consideration by next season. If he falters, he will still provide much-needed veteran leadership in a young Wolf Pack goalie room that includes Callum Tung, Hugo Ollas, and Talyn Boyko.
