A former Premier League referee has given his ruling regarding Arsenal’s penalty claim against Everton.
Late in their draw against Everton, Arsenal came extremely close to receiving a penalty.
Against Everton on Saturday, Arsenal felt they should have had the opportunity to score a last-minute winner only to be denied by VAR. Stubborn Everton held Arsenal scoreless in what turned out be a goalless draw played out on Saturday at the Emirates Stadium.
Mikel Arteta’s men could have reduced the point standings separating them from leaders Liverpool who drew 2-2 at home against Fulham despite being a man down, but could not find the all-important goal to break Everton’s resolve. That’s a decision former Premier League referee Mike Dean agreed with. Speaking on Sky Sports News, he said: “I thought he just got a touch on the ball, the defender, a slight touch before he’s got the player. So for me, no penalty.”
Arteta was also asked about the decision after the game, but he did not want to be drawn on it before seeing a clear replay. “I haven’t seen it. So I cannot comment on that,” he said.
Dyche was quite complimentary after the game, saying: “Even the wing players, who this isn’t natural for, stepped up – Iliman Ndiaye worked very hard in front of Vitaliy Mykolenko, who was outstanding. Ashley Young on the opposite flank worked hard along with Jack Harrison, who also put in a great shift.
