By acting like a ‘jerk,’ Steve Sarkisian helped Texas football prep for Ohio State
Steve Sarkisian can’t read the thoughts of his Texas football players. But he thinks he has a pretty good idea what the members of the Longhorn offense have been thinking for the last week.
“They were probably like, ‘coach Sark’s being a jerk,’” Sarkisian said Saturday afternoon. “Well, I’m being a jerk for the best interest of them, so they can perform.
Sarkisian spent the week barking because of bad pre-snap fundamentals from his offense during Texas’ first fall scrimmage last week. By his estimation, the Longhorns committed 10 or 11 procedural penalties during that dress rehearsal.
After a week of acting like a “jerk,” the Longhorns cut that number to two during their second scrimmage Saturday morning.
“You guys have heard me say it 1,000 times, you get what you emphasize as a coach,” Sarkisian said. “I was kicking myself last Saturday because I probably wasn’t hard enough on some of the pre-snap things in practice, and then it reared its ugly head in the scrimmage. And so, hey, I made it a real point this week.”
Sarkisian listed pre-snap penalties among his items of concern when going on the road for the first time. Playing at Michigan last season in Week 2, the Longhorns committed five pre-snap penalties on offense and special teams in a winning effort in front of 111,170 fans at the Big House — the stadium with the largest capacity in the country
