Ipswich sign Akpom on loan
championship outfit Ipswich Town have announced the signing of Nigerian striker Chuba Akpom on a season-long loan deal from Dutch Eredivisie giants Ajax Amsterdam, PUNCH Sports Extra reports.
The 29-year-old, who spent the 2024/25 campaign away from the Johan Cruyff Arena at French Ligue 1 side LOSC Lille Metropole, where he featured in the UEFA Champions League, is bringing a wealth of experience which will be crucial as Kieran McKenna’s men seek promotion to the Premier League come the end of the 2025/26 campaign.
He has played for the likes of Middlesbrough, Brighton, Hull City and Nottingham Forest throughout his nomadic career.
Akpom’s season-long loan spell could become permanent if Ipswich Town secure promotion to the English top tier. If that happens, they will be obligated to pay Ajax as much as £7m to acquire the Nigerian permanently.
Akpom spoke about his unveiling Town TV, “I was really excited when I heard of the interest and I’m delighted to have joined a club with such big ambitions.I watch a lot of football and have always thought Ipswich would suit my style, so this move makes perfect sense.”
He added, “I have had lots of good experiences over the last few years, at Ajax and playing in the Champions League with Lille, and I feel like all of these have improved me as a player and helped me be the person I am now.”
“I’m here to do as much as I can do to help the team, in the changing room and on the pitch, and I’ll bring a winning mentality here” Akpom concluded.
