FC Union Berlin and goalkeeper Sarah Hornschuch have agreed to terminate their existing contract and end the goalkeeper’s time at the club by mutual agreement.

Hornschuch moved to Union’s U17s in 2014, and was promoted to the first women’s team only a year later. At 17, she became the starting goalkeeper in her first season, ending it celebrating promotion to the 2. Bundesliga. She played throughout 2016/17, but couldn’t help Union stay in the league. After the next season back in the Regionalliga, she transferred to the second division club FF USV Jena.

After four seasons in Jena, including 14 appearances in the 1. Bundesliga, as well as a spell abroad, Hornschuch returned to Berlin for the 2023/24 season. The experienced goalkeeper made one appearance in the Regionalliga and two appearances in the Polytan-Pokal, without conceding a goal. In the recently concluded second division season, the 27-year-old was part of the squad four times but did not play. She also made three Regionalliga appearances with the U23s. Having played 50 competitive matches in the women’s game, winning three promotions, Sarah Hornschuch leaves Union for a second time.

“I look back with great gratitude on a total of six years in the Union jersey and am proud to have been part of the journey to the Bundesliga,” said Hornschuch on the ending of her contract. “I will always cherish the numerous moments shared with the team and the unique support of the Union fans, which provided many goosebump moments, especially at the Stadion An der Alten Försterei.”

FC Union Berlin had this to say of the departing keeper: “In light of the rapid sporting development within our team, we saw no perspective for Sarah. The decision to terminate the contract was mutually agreed upon. We thank Sarah for her commitment and wish her all the best for the future.”
