Ohio State football sets all-time record with latest AP Poll drop, leaving Michigan in the dust for second-place
The Ohio State Buckeyes weren’t able to land the top overall spot in the first Associated Press Poll entering the 2025 season, but that didn’t stop them from making history. The Buckeyes landed in the AP Poll for the 1,000th time, marking the first occurrence of a football program breaking through the triple-digit total since it was first created in 1936.
While the Buckeyes hit quadruple digits, they’re well ahead of the competition for this honor. The Michigan Wolverines are second with 928 appearances, with Oklahoma at 906, and then Alabama and Notre Dame rounding out the top five while tied at 891.Multiple takeaways play into this, including the fact that the AP Poll has only included the Top 25 teams since 1989. Previous iterations included only the Top 10 and Top 20 until the final expansion.
“The AP allows wide latitude for voters to determine their rankings. They are urged to base their votes on performance, not reputation or preseason speculation; to avoid regional bias, for or against; to pay attention to head-to-head results; and to make significant changes if desired. Teams on NCAA probation are eligible for the AP poll.”
The next time anyone gets a good look at the Ohio State Buckeyes will be when they take the field against the Texas Longhorns.
Ohio State’s practices are closed for the rest of the month, and the quarterback competition between Julian Sayin and Lincoln Kienholz remains ongoing.
A new development, however, comes from a former Michigan star who believes the Buckeyes’ offense will be in good hands, largely due to a major transfer addition.
