On3’s Pete Nakos dropped an update on Wednesday on the Tennessee Vols’ ongoing starting quarterback battle.
Tennessee, which is having a quarterback competition due to the unexpected departure of Nico Iamaleava in the spring, is featuring a battle between UCLA transfer Joey Aguilar, redshirt freshman Jake Merklinger, and true freshman George MacIntyre.
According to Nakos’ sources, the battle is down to Aguilar and Merklinger.
“Tennessee’s competition seems to be a battle between Joey Aguilar and Jake Merklinger, per sources,” wrote Nakos. “True freshman George Macintyre has been running with the third team to this point.”
MacIntyre probably has the most upside of the three quarterbacks, but he’s still early in the development process. Specifically, MacIntyre needs to continue to add weight to his frame.
“I think the distribution of reps will determine how real his opportunity is,” said VolQuest’s Austin Price on 104.5 The Zone earlier this week when asked about MacIntyre. “And again, we’re not going to know that, because we’re not in there for a lot of that stuff. But I think for George, I continue to be told he is absolutely in the race, but I still would consider him option three — just because of his weight, experience, all of those things.”
