New York Rangers select Malcolm Spence at No. 43 overall in second round of NHL Draft
The Michigan hockey team is no stranger to the NHL Draft. And with Will Horcoff starting the party on Friday, it didn’t take long before another Wolverine joined the fun in the second round.
On Saturday, another Michigan skater heard his name called as he earned a new sweater before he dons a maize and blue one in the fall. New York Rangers selected forward Malcolm Spence at No. 43 overall in the second round of the draft.
Spence is one of the few players joining the Wolverines in fall by making the jump from the CHL to collegiate hockey due to this season’s rule change. His name has been brought up often in recent draft prospects with his performance at the NHL combine as Spence was praised due to his speed and physicality. Spence snagged 73 points in his 65 games last season for the Erie Otters as he hopes to bring his point production to both Ann Arbor and New York.
While making the decision on whether or not to stay in Erie, Spence credited the need to grow stronger in his stature. By heading to Michigan in the fall, his focus is developing his body for his collegiate and professional career to prepare to compete against stronger players.
