Alabama looking for improved blocking from its tight ends following the Crimson

Alabama’s offense is trying to take the next step under head coach Kalen DeBoer. A lot of the concerns from a season ago have been addressed, but there’s at least one area that’s still an unknown as the season opener against Florida State approaches — the tight ends.

We know how important the tight ends are to DeBoer’s and Ryan Grubb’s offense. No, it’s probably not a featured piece that’s going to finish amongst the top 3-4 in targets or opportunities in the passing game, but a good, balanced threat can do a lot as far as creating spacing and opportunities for others. Plus, we’ve seen how effective strong blocking and timely catches can be when it comes to guys like CJ Dippre and Robbie Ouzts.

Those two are gone though, which means Josh Cuevas is now projected to be Alabama’s top player at the position. He’s not nearly as effective as a blocker, but he’s a better target as a pass-catcher. The Crimson Tide could use someone like Danny Lewis, Brody Dalton, Jack Sammarco or maybe even one of the freshmen to step up and help alleviate any blocking voids.

Following Alabama’s first scrimmage of fall camp on Saturday, DeBoer was asked about how the tight ends have been performing.
