According to Mikel Arteta, the preparations made by Arsenal with respect to the January transfer window will ensure that the club does not go for panic signings as a result of the injuries within his squad.
They say the Gunners are looking to improve their attacking options soon after Bukayo Saka was ruled out due to long-term injury; however, it seems the list of potential targets has existed for some time and will not be influenced with sudden departures such as that of Sporting Director Edu in November.
While he’s confident in steering clear from the knee-jerk reaction, he made it clear that a certain amount of risk is always associated with recruitment. “I think if we panic means that we are not prepared,” he said ahead of Saturday’s trip to Brighton, adding, “And a big thing is preparation. And when you are well prepared, your decisions will be better; they will be really well processed.
And then it will because when we decide that we’re going to sign a player, is it going to be one that performs, yes or no? And that’s a good decision or a bad decision after that? The preparation is there for sure, and we are ready if we have to do something, but we know as well that we have an excellent squad and with available players we can compete against any team.
Clearly, after five years, Arteta still has to learn living without the Brazilian with whom he got along and became a close ally and colleague. The Gunners are expected to tarry before making a headway in witnessing an official announcement concerning a full-time successor to the Sporting Director position-for the time being, Jason Ayto has been trusted with the role on an interim basis.
“It’s different,” Arteta admitted regarding life with Edu.
“I’m so used to doing things with Edu, but Jason was part of that team, a big part of that team. He’s in charge. He’s in full charge right now, and we have great communication. We are talking every day and we are prepared.
“The good thing about that is that neither Jason [Ayto] or I or Rich [Garlick] or Tim [Lewis], the owner, has to convince any players. The players want to come to Arsenal because what Arsenal is and how Arsenal is perceived and that’s a massive bonus.
Birmingham City have just sealed the deal with Arsenal so then it means Matheus Cunha, Takefusa Kubo and Omar Marmoush of Frankfurt is among linked players in that short list. Kieran Tierney is also back negotiating with Celtic over his potential return.
