Mauricio Pochettino calls player Arsenal sold for £17m ‘world-class’ now

Chelsea head coach Mauricio Pochettino has talked effusively about Emiliano Martinez, a player whom Arsenal released to Aston Villa almost three and a half years ago.

Now Chelsea failed to score at the end of the match against Unai Emery’s side on the ground of Stamford Bridge, played yesterday. Chelsea definitely had chances to score, but Martinez was really good for Villa in goal.

Mauricio Pochettino praises Arsenal old-boy Emiliano Martinez.
Emiliano Martinez was a part of Arsenal for almost 10 years.

Though primarily he was out on loan, the goalkeeping ace made his mark in his last year when the Gunners won the FA Cup as well as the Community Shield.

Martinez was then bought by Aston Villa for just £17 million in 2020 (BBC), and ever since, he has been one of the best goalkeepers in the world.

The 31-year-old has been really incredible not just for Villa but also when he represented Argentina. He was a key player in the Copa America and World Cup victories that Argentina has celebrated in recent years.

Last night, Martinez produced another brilliant performance, which did not go unnoticed by Mauricio Pochettino after the draw his side had to settle for.

In comments made to BBC Sport on Martinez, the Chelsea boss said: “Of course, he’s a world champion and he is world-class. It’s always so difficult to beat them.”

Further praising him, Pochettino said according to Sky Sports: “On Tuesday, we scored six. Today, one would be good! But it’s because the keeper (Martinez) is an amazing keeper and sometimes you need some luck to score.”

Martinez is currently on-the-rise after leaving Arsenal.
Emi Martinez would never have been the first-choice goalkeeper at Arsenal.

It was only when Bernd Leno suffered an unfortunate injury at the end of the 2019/20 campaign that Martinez got his chance and changed his fortunes permanently.

From a fine finale to his professional Arsenal career, Martinez then took his performances to a new height, becoming a marquee player for Aston Villa and Argentina and now one of the top goalkeepers in the world.

Villa are having an incredible season; if Martinez continues to save them in those moments of trouble, they might really be achieving something very special in a few months’ time.
