According to the latest annual report published by SPFL, the turnover has reached the unparalleled height and its subsequent distribution to the various clubs has also changed with Celtic at the helm receiving the all-time high awards gone to the Scottish Champions.
In the latest report released by the SPFL, figures on the turnover indicate it has gone up by 2.4million pounds (6%) compared to 41.9 million last year which was the previous highest.
The increase has been primarily driven by the league’s new Sky Sports TV deal, as well as revenue growth from the SPFL’s other domestic and overseas broadcasting agreements.
These figures also show that the fee payments to clubs have increased by 2 million pounds to 33.7 million pounds which is an increase of another 6% with the total group distributions to clubs amounting to 37.9 million pounds compared with 35.8 million pounds last year.
Neil Doncaster, CEO of the SPFL group, expressed his satisfaction and excitement concerning the unveiling of financial growth in turnover and fee payments to the clubs within a short span of time which is a clear sign of no debt for the league as spelt on the official SPFL website.
Doncaster said: “In light of the current tough market and economic environment, such results are very promising and demonstrate local Scottish football’s vast appeal and how much such a sport attracts our broadcasters and ever-growing sponsors’.
“In the past few months, we have entered into a significant new title sponsorship contract with William Hill and a new broadcast agreement with Premier Sports. The SPFL has reported in a recent UEFA study that spectators attended games in higher numbers on average than all other leagues in Europe and while there is no room for mood’s satisfaction, such figures provide us with an excellent base to perform better going forward.”
According to Murdoch MacLennan, who serves as the chairman of SPFL, “With these results, the member clubs of the SPFL and appreciation of the hard work by the SPFL whose staff truly work nonstop to promote the game.
“We are happy that we are in a position to provide our members with the largest annual distributions in the history of the Scottish leagues and grateful to our members for their active support.” “These figures do NOT include revenues derived from Scottish Cup earnings from ticket sales and TV rights as this falls under the Scottish FA jurisdiction and thus is paid out separately.”
